Special Boiler & Special oilwell Operator

Special COVID Instructions: Participants must be seated 10' apart and will be required to wear a mask during examination.

Course outline:

This one day exam prep course is designed for rig workers or small power plant operators who require a general knowledge of the safe operation of a boiler as a SPECIAL BOILER OPERATOR (SBO) or SPECIAL OILWELL OPERATOR (SOO). The Special Boiler Operator exam consists of questions relating to the subjects contained in the reference syllabus for the operation of a power plant that has a capacity not exceeding 250 kw. To qualify for the Special Boiler Operator, the candidate must currently be employed in the operation of a power plant that has a capacity not exceeding 250 kw. The Special Oilwell Operator exam consists of questions relating to the subjects contained in the reference syllabus for the operation of a power plant that has a capacity not exceeding 1000 kw at drilling sites. To qualify for the Special Oilwell Operator, participant must gain 6 months experience in an installation that involves a boiler or boilers operating as part of a transportable power plant at a drilling or hydrocarbon site.
 
Course will review boiler design, operationregulatory codes and acts, thermodynamics and combustion, mechanical properties of metals, basic boiler construction, boiler fittings, feedwater treatment, boiler maintenance and basic fire extinguisher knowledge. 
 
Upon successful completion of the exam that is conducted by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA), you will be certified by ABSA. 
 

PREREQUISITE

Special Boiler Operator (SBO) is a non-standardized certificate of competency issued by Alberta through ABSA. It is a site-specific certificate of competency that certifies the operator to supervise a power plant of a capacity not exceeding 250 kW.

For Special Boiler Operator training you will need to complete forms 66 and 66a.  Application Forms must be submitted 21 days prior to the exam date. ABSA recommends completing this fillable word document over handwriting.  Once form is completed email to admin@fssafetybuzz.ca so F&S Safety Buzz can submit for approval by ABSA.  Forms must be completed in full.  

It is important to note that a person who has earned this certificate is eligible to operate the boiler at one specific site only. Currently, this certificate of competency is not subject to annual renewal.

Special Oilwell Operator (SOO) is a non-standardized certificate of competency issued by Alberta. It certifies the operator to operate transportable power plants, with capacity up to 1000 kW, at drilling sites. This in not a site specific certificate. The certificate is subject to the annual renewal fee through ABSA.

Applicatn must complete form AB-144.  Application Forms must be submitted 21 days prior to the exam date. ABSA recommends completing this fillable word document over handwriting. Once form is completed email to admin@fssafetybuzz.ca so F&S Safety Buzz can submit for approval by ABSA. Forms must be completed in full including Boiler A #, chief engineer and student signature.

Special Boiler Operator’s Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must currently be employed in the operation of a power plant that has a capacity not exceeding 250 kW.

Special Oilwell Operators

  • obtained 6 months experience in an installation that involves a boiler or boilers operating as part of a transportable power plant at a drilling or hydrocarbon production site, or
  • successfully completed a vocational course in boiler operation satisfactory to the Administrator.


Exam Instructions:

Examination will be facilitated and certified through ABSA.  F&S Safety Buzz does not have any authority over the examination.

A Special Boiler Operator’s Certificate of Competency examination consists of questions relating to the subjects contained in the current reference syllabus established by the Administrator for the Special Boiler Operator’s Certificate of Competency examination. The examination consists of one (1) examination paper with 50 multiple-choice questions, 1.5 hours duration.

To pass a Special Boiler Operator’s Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must receive at least 65% of the total marks allotted for the examination.

A Special Oilwell Operators Certificate of Competency examination must consist of questions relating to the subjects contained in the current reference syllabus established by the Administrator for the Special Oilwell Operators Certificate of Competency examination. The exam consists of one (1) examination paper with 100 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours duration.

  • To pass a Special Oilwell Operators Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must obtain at least 65% of the total marks allotted for the examination.
